Josepf Ebnother was born in 1937. The Swiss painter, graphic artist and glass artist first completed an apprenticeship as a painter and scriptwriter. From 1959-1964 he attended courses and seminars at the School of Applied Arts in St. Gallen and at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière and at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His painterly early work in the 1960's testifies to objectivity. Ebnother created works in the tradition of Abstract Expressionism. In this sense, Ebnöther understands his formally reduced paintings both as "mental images" and as "open works of art". In the early 1990's, Ebnother worked in the church of St. Joseph in Kempen (near Dusseldorf), the St. Gallen. During this commissioned work, he made the acquaintance of the German altar painter Ulrich Rückriem (born 1938). Inspired by Ruckriem's work, Ebnöther still processes religious subjects in his compositions. In addition, he deals with the seasonal changes in the landscape.
